Recently, on my YouTube channel I’ve reached 150 subscribers. To celebrate, I decided to do a different type of post. On both my channel and my blog, I almost exclusively talk about books (though some of my longtime readers might remember some random movie/Asian drama posts). So today I want to share 10 non-bookish facts about myself.
Also, most of these I actually demonstrated in my video, so feel free to watch the video version of this post below. Now let’s get into the post!
1. I’m left handed
Apparently, only about 10% of the population is left-handed and if you are male, you are 1.23 times more likely to be left-handed than females. I just thought that was an interesting fact.
But yes, I’m left-handed (I got it from my mom, who is also left-handed). However, I do most things with my right hand. Most people who learn I’m left-handed also wonder if I have trouble in a world where most everything is made for right-handed people, but I really don’t. I can even write a bit with my right hand, even if it looks like it was written by a five-year-old.
2. I have played piano since I was six
I recorded a short demonstration of me playing in my video at the 1 minute 32 second mark. I took lessons between age six and fifteen, and I still play for fun and enjoyment. Learning piano is amazing for young children, as studies have shown it helps with concentration, problem-solving, coordination of different parts of your body, etc.
I feel so lucky that my parents paid for lessons for me when I was younger, and I fully intend to use this skill to teach my own children piano someday.
3. I love photography
Since I was a teenager, I’ve loved taking nature photography. I’m not especially great at it, but I do enjoy it. I even saved up the money to buy a fancier camera when I was 21. If you want to see some of the random pictures I love to take, make sure to follow me on Instagram, which is linked to the right of this post.
4. I’ve taken two years of Chinese
(I even go ahead and speak a bit of Chinese is my video!) I’m mentioned this before on my blog that I finished my two years of Chinese this past spring (which was nightmare taking a language online!).
I’m definitely not the best at Chinese (my pronunciation and tones are horrible), and I have trouble reading a lot of the characters, but I do love the challenge and intricacies of such a complex, ancient language!
5. I used to compete in figure skating
I start lessons in figure skating when I was about 7 and competed up until about 10. I took classes on and off up until college, but I never could get good at all the hard spins and jumps. I preferred ice dancing (which focuses on footwork as opposed to jumps and skins). I really should go back and ice skate again!
6. I have wanted to be a writer since I was 7
I still have some awful stories I wrote when I was eight or so (I refuse to ever show them to you). When I was younger, I exclusively wrote fantasy, but as a tween/teen, I switched over to more historical and mysteries. I have been published in a couple of my college’s publications, but I’ve never had a book published. Someday!
7. I’ve been sewing since I was 7 too
That, and knitting and crocheting. I’m not exceptional at sewing (my sister and mother are so much better), but I do enjoy it. I’ve made shirts, skirts, medieval dresses, and even a crocheted sweater. I think it’s important for everyone to know at least the basics of sewing (even just being able to resew on a button which has fallen off or, my person favorite, adding pockets to everything!).
8. I’ve lived in a lot of different places
From age 0 to 9, I lived in 4 different houses in three different US states. I was born in Oregon, moved to another house in Oregon, moved to New Mexico for about a year, and then moved Minnesota. Then two years ago, I moved to Ohio. So I’ve lived in a total of 5 different houses in 4 different states. That’s a lot…
9. I have weird allergies…
Sure, I’m allergic to dust and grass, which is pretty common, but I’m also allergic to hops. Yes, that wheat ingredient in beer, which means I can’t drink beer. I also react horribly to mosquito bites, despite mosquitos loving me. I mean, I went to a hike a couple weeks ago with my boyfriend and he came out with about 5 mosquito bites and I came out with 15…on one arm! The bites also get super puffy and scar for a few weeks. It’s pretty bad…I show a picture in my video at the 6 minute 4 second mark.
10. I have enjoyed watching Asian dramas for over a decade
I’ve mentioned this a couple times on my blog, but since I was sixteen, I have watched so many Asian dramas! And not just Korean and Chinese, which seem to be the most popular. I’ve watched Thai, Japanese, and Filipino as well. Honestly, I just love learning about cinema from different countries.
Do you share any of my unique facts? What are some interesting non-bookish facts about you? Let me know your thoughts down in the comments, thank you so much for reading, follow my blog for more musings and, as always,
Best wishes in your life full of adventure,
