Books I’m Excited for May, 2018

Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne

Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Retelling

Release date: May 1st, 2018

This is a debut novel. Seventeen-year-old Stella Ainsley wants to get off the spaceship she’s been stuck on her entire life. She takes the job as a governess on the ship Rochester, captained by the notorious recluse Hugo Fairfax. But the ship houses secrets, and both their lives might be in danger.

Does the plot sound a little familiar? Yep, space Jane Eyre. I mean, how awesome is that? Let me just say that my expectations are high for this one, as Jane Eyre is one of my favorite classics of all time. So I really want to read it!

Murder on Union Square (Gaslight Mystery #21) by Victoria Thompson

Genre: Historical, Mystery

Release date: May 1st, 2018

In the latest installment of The Gaslight Mysteries, Sarah and Frank Mallory are enjoying married life with their adoptive daughter Catherine. That is, until her legal father turns up demanding money, just to turn up dead soon after. Frank appears to be guilty and he and Sarah must find the man’s true murderer before Frank himself pays the price.

If you’ve never heard of this series, I highly recommend it. Of course, if this book sounds interesting, I would recommend you to start from the beginning of the series. I did a review earlier this week about these books (you can find my review here). I still have two more books to read until I’m caught up with this series, but I’ll have finished them by the time this one comes out.

The Perfect Mother by Aimee Molloy

Genre: Thriller, Fiction

Release date: May 1st, 2018

They are called the May Mothers—a group of women who gave birth during the same month. They meet together with their babies in New York City. However, when one of the babies goes missing, the mother and her friends will go to whatever lengths to find the son, uncovering dangerous secrets in the meantime.

I don’t usually read thrillers, but the title of this one as well as the plot intrigued me. The idea of kidnapping an infant is terrifying—maybe I’ve watched too many Criminal Minds episodes—and a mother’s protection of her child pretty much trumps everything else. So I’m excited to read this one.

Furyborn (Empirium #1) by Claire Legrand

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult

Release Date: May 22, 2018

A thousand years ago, Rielle Dardenne risked her life to save the crown prince by enduring seven trials to test her magic. Now, she is merely a legend to bounty hunter Eliana Ferracora, who is struggling to survive in a dangerous kingdom and find her mother and countless other women who have gone missing. This book tells the story of Rielle and Eliana, two people a millennia apart, who fight to save their world, connecting their stories forever.

I have been really disappointed with young adult fantasy that has come out so far this year. However, I love stories that are set in two different times and weave together two different stories. Thus, I want to give this one a chance. Also, there is a lot of hype around this book…I’m shooting myself in the foot, aren’t I?

What books are you looking forward to that are coming out in May? Let me know down in the comments, follow my blog for more madness, and, as always,

Best wishes in your life full of adventure,

Madame Writer
