Happy Easter and National Poetry Month!

I don’t usually post on Sundays, but I had to today for two reasons.

First, to wish you all…

Second, to give a big announcement for next month.

For those who don’t know, April is National Poetry Month. Last November, I successfully completely National Novel Month for the first time (the goal was to complete 50,000 words in one month) and kept a daily blog while doing it. Similarly, this month the goal is to write one poem a day for 30 days.

Now, I don’t write poetry. It’s not that I dislike it; it just isn’t my preferred writing style. I tried to complete this challenge a few years ago when I was in college, but due to classes and just being busy, I gave up about a quarter of the way in.

However, this coming month I’m taking the plunge (and possibly shooting myself in the foot) and taking on the challenge of one poem a day (my first poem will be coming out later today).

Similar to my November challenge, I will be posting on my blog daily with updates (also, I will be trying to sustain my three regular posts a week). However, different to November, I will be posting my actual poems (yay….).

Unlike some amazing poets I follow here on WordPress (like The Lonely Author), I am a complete amateur when it comes to writing poetry. I’m not a huge fan of modern poetry, as you might have guessed from my Traditional Poetry vs. Modern Poetry article. However, I’m going for it.

I’m paving the way, making a start, laying the first stone…had enough idioms yet?

This may be the worst month of my life…or it could be my best. We’ll see.

Going into this, I’m asking a favor from all my followers: What is your favorite poet? I want to read a bunch of poems during this coming month so, in a sense, I learn from the experts. Thanks in advance!

Best wishes in your life full of adventure,

Madame Writer

  1. Isabelle Kenyon, Nicholas Trandahl, Melissa Jennings, and Linda Crate are some of my favourite contemporary poets. I hope your writing is going well.

    1. I have read a few poems by Cummings and enjoyed them, so I’ll have to check him and Williams out. Thanks for the recommendations! And you really should try your hand at poetry this month! I’d love to see your poems if you post them on your blog!

  2. Oh I wish you luck with your poetry writing, it is my first time doing #NaPoWriMo I’m an old fashioned girl I generally like a poem to rhyme. My very favourite poet is Percy Bysshe Shelley Romantic Poet and husband to Mary Shelley of ‘Frankenstein’ fame. I also signed up to a great site that has new poets and classic poets on. It is worth checking out if you have not done so already ‘All Poetry’ https://allpoetry.com/poems

    1. Thanks for the advice. I’ll check out that website. Like you, I love classic poets. I haven’t read much by Shelley, but I’ll have to check him out. Thanks for the suggestions and good luck with your NaPoWriMo!
